Hair loss is very common. It occurs in men and women. And recently, we are seeing it in younger patients.
The most common cause of is male or female patten hair loss that occurs with aging and results in a receding hairline in men and thinning hair in women. This hair loss is associated with hormone changes and medical conditions.
Recently, we have seen more hair loss associated with high tension hair styles such as hair extension, hair weaves, braids and ponytails. These styles put tension on the scalp and may diminish blood flow to the follicle. Some of these styles can lead to inflammation in the scalp and/or fungal infections of the scalp.
Hair loss is an emotional issue. We associate a thick head of hair with attractiveness and youth. The attempts to mask hair loss can result in more damage.
